Community Involvement

Our commitment to architectural excellence and innovation extends beyond design and construction.  Collectively, we are constantly looking for ways to expand our experiences beyond the day-to-day rigors of our work.  That's what keeps us fresh and fun.

The firm has sponsored or participated in many community events, such as:

Career Days
We have hosted several career day shadowing programs in our office focused on architecture and design.  Staff have also donated time to teaching architecture courses in public and private schools, as well as local universities.

Canstruction
"Canstruction" is an annual design/build competition held in cities throughout North America. Each year, we participate in Richmond's "Canstruction", which benefits the Central Virginia Food Bank.  The cans used to build the theme based designs are then donated to the Food Bank.

MathScience Innovation Center
This year, BCWH participated in the MathScience Innovation Center's teacher conference on Innovations in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Staff members presented BCWH's Green Spaces Competition entry to encourage teachers to use competitions as a collaborative teaching tool for students. The MathScience Innovation Center (MSIC) is a leader in K-12 math and science education for the eight Central Virginia school divisions within their 42-year-old consortium. In addition to students attending lessons and courses daily at the center, MSIC staff serve as guest educators at the within the consortium.

Cure by Design Fashion Runway Design Competition
Each year, this design competition is held for creation of the runway that will be constructed for the fashion show.  Although they have participated of their own accord, BCWH Architects has had an employee win the Cure by Design Fashion Runway Design Competition for three different shows! Cure by Design is an event in which the fashion, design and retail communities join forces with the local corporate community to benefit the American Cancer Society. The focus of this special evening is a fashion show that spotlights designer fashions and the cancer survivors who model them.

Culture Works
BCWH has participated in the Culture Works (Formerly Arts fund) Campaign Week for many years. This week is dedicated to daily Richmond Arts highlights. In previous years, we have had guest artists teach a class in our office and show us their work.  In celebration of the performing arts, we have made visits to both the Richmond Ballet and Richmond Symphony during rehearsals. We even celebrate our own artistic talents among one another; we have had principals and staff play instruments and display their drawings for everyone to enjoy. BCWH supports The Campaign Week's goal to raise money and awareness for the Arts in Richmond.

Farm to Family
Recently, we have made an effort to support local VA farmers by purchasing produce, dairy and meat from the "Farm to Family" Bus when it stops near our office! This bus delivers fresh food from local farms within a 150 mile radius. All the animals on these farms are grass fed, free range and live a good life with clean mountain sunshine, air and water. Come and get on the bus!
